Karthik's unintended forays into Deepak Raj's (the character is played by Arun Vijay) turf bring him into direct confrontation with him. The thread makes a reappearance in the climax, only to be punctuated with a Megastar dose. Karthik has a lovable sister (Kriti Kharbanda), a mother and a constantly chiding father (Rao Ramesh), and isn't this premise enough to have a family sub-plot woven in the story? It is done, it takes the form of father-son banter and brother-sister sentiment. Charan plays an almost full-fledged star's comedy, revealing in the process the Chiranjeevi in him in a role reversal of sort, Chiranjeevi imitates his son, visibly with pride! Megastar playing Megastar is a magical moment in the climax, amply perking up an otherwise moribund proceeding.Ĭharan plays Karthik, a stuntman working in film industry, mistaken by Riya (Rakul Preet Singh) to be a brave cop out to cleanse the system. Kona Venkat and Gopi Mohan pen a script that blends situational comedy with occasional action and half-hearted romance. Besides, the hero plays a con on the villain, and like in 'Dookudu', shows his intense avatar whenever the opportunity comes (however, it comes only once and it is when Bruce Lee shows his serious hero side, with a topping of a Hindi line - at the lift).

Then there is that 'Dookudu' narration which means the story moves forward in even an apparently comedy scene thus, the heroine unintentionally involves her boy friend in unravelling a don-like character's empire. If the villain has a womanising side to him (like a negative character in 'Aagadu' had), the hero plays an instrumental role in exposing that side, complete with playing a Mahesh Babu, with Brahmanandam in tandem. How much you will love this film might just be a matter of how big a fan of Chiranjeevi you are.'Bruce Lee' has traces of 'Aagadu' and 'Dookudu' if one goes beyond scratching the surface. Thaman's music adds a zing to the proceedings aided by pretty visuals courtesy cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa. Save Rao Ramesh and Arun Vijay no one really stands out, thanks more to the screen time than real acting chops. Ram Charan is in his element when dancing and pulling off the stunts, and he even tries his hand at comedy, but that's still a work in progress. Things come to a head when, his father's employer, Jayraj (Sampath) himself turns out to be the biggest threat his sister's life.Īs for the performances, let's just say they are all in synch with the script.

There is a surfeit of funny characters - be it the overtly caricaturised aging superstar, Blockbuster Brahmaji (Brahmaji), the stunning but goofy daughter of DIG, Riya (Rakul) (who seems inspired by Sridevi in Kshana Kshanam), or Brahmanandam who plays an undercover agent who didn't crack a single case all his career, to name a few - but the jokes just don't work, save a few here and there.Īmidst all the forced tomfoolery the plot ploughs on, with Karthik clearing one hurdle after another that comes in the way of his sister becoming a collector.

While the film gets the melodrama bit right, sadly the gags that turn out to be the dampener. He grows up to become a stuntman much to his dad's chagrin which he makes no secret of. But for Karthik, helping his sister achieve her dream of becoming a collector is more important. Unable to afford to send both his children to a good school, the dad decides the son must get the better education. The episode in which Karthik deliberately flunks his exams just to prompt his dad to send his sister to the better school is one of them. Well, there are a few moments that the filmmaker got right. Saving the cameo for the climax might just be the smartest thing the director did in the film. It's as though, for those few minutes that the Megastar is onscreen, nothing else matters - not Ram Charan, not the plot (which isn't there anyways) or even the logic of why Chiru is doing there in the first place. For it's ridiculous, the effect that fleeting sighting of the much loved matinee idol, clearly past his prime, doing what he does best, after a long hiatus, has on the movie watching experience as a whole. Chiru's special appearance in Bruce Lee proves as much. Movie review: Can a cameo, not more than five minutes long at best, turn out to be the most remarkable part of a two-and-a-half hour long feature film? Apparently, yes. Story: The film tells the story of Karthik aka Bruce Lee (Charan) who has just one goal in life - to help his elder sister, Kavya (Kriti) pursue her dreams.
